As the long-awaited reopening of Southern Ocean Lodge takes place this month, a powerful symbol of regeneration of both land and community, we reflect on the privilege of travel…and the gift of travel.
The magnetic call of travel signifies the freedom, space and connection many of us crave.
The experience and connection to nature and culture can at the same time support the sustainable future of travel, place and community.
Many of the Luxury Lodges of Australia have formed partnerships with local, established and emerging artists, recognising and supporting the creativity of a region and the power of art to deepen understanding of the environment and culture and build a sense of place.
Southern Ocean Lodge once again champions art and partnerships as part of its unique appeal. Founder Hayley Baillie has rekindled established partnerships, and fostered new connections to bring local appeal, stories and depth to the lodge. The Louise, Barossa Valley, affectionately known as the cheeky little sister to Southern Ocean Lodge, has also nurtured partnerships with some of the Barossa’s best local artists, leaning into the feminine art world to bring to life the persona of the reimagined Louise.
Sal Salis, a luxury tented camp with a minimal footprint, is the only accommodation in the protected lands where World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef meets the Cape Range National Park. To step from the luxe safari-style camp onto the beach, take a drift snorkel over the reef just metres from the shore, watch the sun set deep into the Indian Ocean, with whales breaching just past the waves breaking over the reef are nothing short of pinch-me moments. An acknowledgement of the privilege of place that comes with vital and precious locations.
The next few months see the annual rainy season sweep across the far northern end of the continent. From March onwards, the land is accessible once more, freshened and fertile after the rain, full of birdlife and wildlife. A visit to Bamurru Plains and El Questro Homestead combines the expanse of the Mary River floodplain with the vast Kimberley wilderness. Exclusive access to this vastness and the gift of connection to place through the expertise of knowledgable guides is the key to this luxury luxury Australian safari.
Travel is a very personal thing. Luxury Lodges of Australia gift vouchers allow for choice of location, adventure, style of lodge and dates of travel. They are the invitation to experience the privilege of travel, create moments of anticipation and excitement in the planning, and in turn, unforgettable memories.
