Stargazing

It is a factor of human nature to want to make sense of the awe above us. For millennia, humans have used planets, stars, constellations and other night-sky phenomena for a multitude of purposes. All over the world we find people and cultures whose stories are anchored in this vast, mesmerising canopy.

Australia's vastness, much of it barely populated and untainted by light and air pollution, provides some of the most exceptional celestial clarity experienced by stargazers past and present.

Australia's first astronomers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have long used their understanding of Dark Sky Country to tell the time of year, to navigate across the land and through unknown seas, to know when to find food, to teach appropriate behaviour, and to explain why things are as they are today. There is striking similarity in the way different human cultures throughout history have decoded the constellations - ancient stories, with parallels common to many places on earth.

'Dark Sky Tourism' or 'Astrotourism' is an emerging worldwide trend. The regional and remote locations of the luxury lodges are some of the most magnificent places from which to observe the Milky Way in Australia. After the sun has sunk below the horizon, conversation is gently hushed by deepening darkness, the night sky stages a meeting place poised for storytelling, sharing, dreaming.
