DECEMBER – FEBRUARY

Summer

The Australian summer is typified by long lazy days at the thousands of beaches on both sides of the continent. The interior is hot but long days bring opportunities to capture the intense colours of the desert. The southern summer is ideal for hiking and exploring. And in the north, the intensity of tropics starts to build with dramatic clouds and skies and lush lush green.

FLINDERS RANGES, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Summer at Arkaba

Summer is the hottest time to be in the Flinders Ranges with temperatures reaching up to 40°C (104°F) during the day with the warmth extending into the evenings. The heat and dry landscapes provide a quintessentially Australian outback experience. The red earth of the region is at its most picturesque, and the dust in the air creates vibrant sunsets.

TOP END/KAKADU, NORTHERN TERRITORY

Summer at Bamurru Plains

Summer is hot and wet in the Top End and the arrival of the full monsoon brings heavy rains and high tides with average daily temperatures ranging from 24-33ºC (75-91ºF). The rivers burst their banks and spread out across the floodplains, water lilies flower and life returns to the country in all its majesty. Bamurru Plains is closed from November through February during the months of the wet season.

EAST KIMBERLEY, NORTHERN TERRITORY

Summer at Bullo River Station

Throughout summer the 40ºC+ weather and high humidity of the peak of the wet season creates extreme conditions, bringing tropical weather including thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rains. It’s not unusual for parts of the property to flood, cutting off access roads, and therefore Bullo River Station is closed from October – March each year during the months of the wet season.

Summer at Capella Lodge

Lord Howe Island enjoys a perpetual spring-like climate year-round, and sea breezes prevent the summers at Capella Lodge from being too hot, hovering at a very comfortable 25°C (77ºF). Summer days are perfect for taking mountain or rainforest walks, relaxing on white-sanded beaches and exploring the riot of marine colour in the warm waters of the world’s southernmost coral reef.

Summer at El Questro Homestead

The wet season spans from October to April, a time of increased humidity and increased rainfall (32-40ºC). El Questro Homestead closes during the hot summer months in The Kimberley between the end of October and the beginning of April each year.

Summers are mild and sunny and Daylesford’s daily temperatures usually hover a couple of degrees below Melbourne’s daily temperature. The picturesque village of Daylesford, an easy walk or cycle from Lake House, offers the opportunity to explore interesting local shops, galleries and markets.

Summer at Lizard /sland

Lizard Island benefits from the best of the Great Barrier Reef’s weather with a tropical climate and average daily temperature of approximately 32°C in summer.  The warm water temperature seduces with a multitude of reef and aquatic activities. ULURU, NORTHERN TERRITORY

Summer at Longitude 131°

During the hot summer months, average temperatures range from 37°C during the day to 20°C overnight at Longitude 131°. On average Uluru-Kata Tjuta receives approximately 308mm (12 inches) of rain per year. Summer storms passing across the outback offer the rare chance to sight waterfalls cascading down Uluru.

SOUTHWEST TASMANIA

Summer at On Board

During summer, daily temperatures in Southwest Tasmania generally range from 15 to 25°C, with overnight minimums averaging between 9 and 11°C. It can be moderately cool when windy. On Board operates expedition cruises travelling around Southwest Tasmania in January and March every year and is also available for exclusive charter.

Pretty Beach House is nestled into the Bouddi National Park and enjoys four distinctive seasons. Similar to Sydney, the Bouddi Peninsula enjoys warm summers benefiting from gentle coastal breezes. Hot days and balmy nights provide perfect conditions for swimming and other aquatic activities.

The tropical wet season for the Great Barrier Reef occurs during January to March when days can be steamy and the summer heat is often broken by refreshing, tropical showers. qualia enjoys hot and sunny summers with the average daily temperature of 30°C. Summer months in Tasmania have long daylight hours and warmer average temperatures can reach around 27ºC, perfect for exploring this iconic Freycinet region. After a day of exploring and with overnight low averages around 12°C, this is the perfect time of year to watch the sunset colours splash across the Hazards from your private deck.

Summer at Sal Salis

Sal Salis enjoys a climate often described as Mediterranean, experiencing warm weather throughout the year. Average daily temperatures reach 29-30ºC in December and January during the height of summer. Sal Salis is closed throughout the hottest part of the year, from mid-November to mid-March.

Summer at Silky Oaks Lodge

November to April is generally the wet season in the Daintree with frequent tropical rain, high humidity and hotter days and nights. Unwind with early morning yoga classes, indulge in the Healing Waters Spa, take lazy swims in the billabong or soak up the stunning rainforest and river vistas while relaxing in a hammock.

Summer at Mt Mulligan Lodge

The first afternoon thunderstorms approach in December with the coming of the wet season, spectacular displays of monsoon rainclouds burst from the sky and the land becomes rich and green within days. Migratory birds arrive and wildlife flourishes. Mt Mulligan Lodge closes from late January to early March each year.

Summer at The Louise

The Barossa Valley is regarded as a warm climate wine region, with temperatures in the summer often rising to 30°C. Smell the seductive bouquet of wine ageing gracefully in barrel as you enter the many wineries and cellar doors of the region. The Louise is only a few minutes away from five dozen cellar doors. Finish each day with a twilight dip in the lodge pool, overlooking the surrounding vineyards.

Summer at True North Adventure Cruises

In summer, True North ventures south to the temperate climate in Sydney and southern Australia where the days are warm and the nights refreshing. True North II heads to the Great Barrier Reef early in summer and then joins True North in Sydney to bring in the New Year.

Autumn at Arkaba

Autumn at Arkaba brings warm days with cooler evenings, ranging between 15-25°C (60-77°F) during the day, calling for warm layered clothing at night. The end of the dry season brings the possibility of some early rains, though the land is still mostly beautiful oranges, reds and browns. As the days cool, wildlife becomes more active during the middle parts of the day.

Autumn at Bamurru Plains

Dry season arrives in mid-autumn at Bamurru Plains. Nights can be cool and early morning fogs common with average daily temperatures ranging from 20-33ºC (68-91ºF). The days are warm, dry and generally cloudless with clear blue skies and spectacular sunsets. From April the water begins to ever-so-slowly recede from the floodplains which continues throughout winter.

Autumn at Bullo River Station

Bullo River Station opens for the season in April each year. By this time the wet season and extreme humidity have tapered off, the waterholes are full and the waterfalls are flowing. Migratory birds start to depart, but with the river systems full, barramundi are abundant for those interested in a spot of catch-and-release fishing. From May, the humidity is replaced with a lovely dry heat, with daytime temperatures over 30ºC.

Autumn at Capella Lodge

Autumn on Lord Howe Island is a beautiful time to admire the wildlife and enjoy the many island activities on offer year-round, such as reef walking and birdwatching. During autumn tens of thousands of providence petrels arrive for their winter breeding season. Daytime temperatures range from 22–25°C (72-77ºF) in autumn.

El Questro opens for the season in April each year. Autumn is the beginning of the dry season in The Kimberley – the wet season fades away, leaving blue skies and low humidity. Autumn at Lake House

The Daylesford region experiences brilliant seasonal changes. A glorious time to witness the autumnal colours reflecting on Lake Daylesford as daytime temperatures drop and nights are brisk. In autumn, peak harvest season sees an abundance of food and wine activity on the doorstep of Lake House. You’ll find vintage celebrations at neighbouring wineries, in-house cooking classes and local farmers markets.

Daily temperatures on Lizard Island hover around 30°C and evenings are warm. Clear skies and early twilights bring red sunsets over the Pacific. The Southern Cross constellation rises early in the night sky. Birdlife begins to show breeding plumage before migration. Giant clams laze on the seabed as nosey potato cod keep watch. Here, the marine life is renowned the world over.

Winter at Arkaba

Winter is particularly beautiful in the Ikara-Flinders Ranges with cold nights and warm days bookended with vivid sunrises and sunsets. This season is ideal for exploring the outback with daily temperatures of around 15°C (60°F) and occasionally as high as 25°C (77°F). Nights are chilly, often dropping below 0° (32°F), but roaring campfires warm guests on their return from each day’s adventure.

Winter at Bamurru Plains

Cool nights and early morning fogs lead to warm and dry days and spectacular sunsets during the dry season at Bamurru Plains, with average temperatures ranging from 17-30ºC (63-86ºF). The retreating waters concentrate in billabongs together with the birdlife which congregates in extraordinary numbers. Many tropical woodland plants flower at this time of year.

Winter at Bullo River Station

June and July bring the peak of the dry season, with pleasantly warm temperatures ranging from the high 20s to low 30s during the day followed by chilly nights. Definitely pack warm layers if you plan to be outside when the sun is down. From August onwards seasonal water sources have dried up, concentrating birdlife to the few year-round waterholes available, which makes them easier to find for bird enthusiasts.

During winter, make the most of the mild weather on Lord Howe Island to tackle a Mt Gower hike, explore remote rocky coves alive with magnificent birdlife or wander valleys brimming with ancient plants. Daytime temperatures range from 18-22ºC (64-72ºF) in winter. Capella Lodge is generally closed for the months of July and August each year.

The winter temperatures in Daylesford dip with a daytime average of 13°C and overnight minimum of 4°C. It is not uncommon for light snow to blanket parts of the region. Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef is an ideal winter destination in Australia. Temperatures remain in the high 20°s and the water is warm and clear. Humpback whales begin their northern migration, curious minke whales often approach the tour vessel for a closer look and playful spinner dolphins may surf the bow wave on the outer reef trips.

During the winter months, temperatures in Southwest Tasmania drop considerably but conditions on Tasmania’s East Coast are milder, with winter daily temperatures between 3 and 11°C. During the winter months On Board offers regular departures on its Tasmania’s East Coast expeditions, and is also available for charter for floating functions and events.

Winter sees temperatures ranging between 7-20°C on the Bouddi Peninsula. Winter at qualia

With temperatures in the early to mid-20s°C and warm waters year round, qualia is an ideal winter escape. Humpback whales migrate north from the Antarctic and make their way to the Whitsundays each winter to give birth, socialise and to mate. During the months of June to September you can spot these beautiful creatures in the waters around the Whitsunday islands, and occasionally on the Great Barrier Reef.

Tasmania experiences a relatively cold winter with temperatures ranging from 4ºC overnight to 10ºC during the day, but days are usually bright and clear. From adventure to romance, rejuvenation to exploration the range of activities available at Saffire Freycinet add greater depth and dimension to a visit to Freycinet. Warm layered clothing is recommended for exploring in winter.

Winter at Sal Salis

Winter nights on the Ningaloo Reef are cool with warm days. At high tide take gentle stroll up the beach, dodging soldier crabs, before drift snorkelling back along the inner edge of the reef. Or kayak out to the Blue Lagoon, a five-metre deep natural aquarium where huge schools of fish, reef sharks and turtles swim amongst the coral formations. Winter is the peak season to witness whale sharks and humpback whales in clear, warm waters.

Spring at Arkaba

Spring at Arkaba is undeniably spectacular. The outback blooms with native plants and wildflowers and it is a great time to spot emu chicks as they begin hatching. Migratory birds will begin to appear and wedgetail eagle chicks will emerge between August and September, fledging by November. Day temperatures can average between 20–25°C (68-77°F) getting warmer at the end of the season.

Spring at Bamurru Plains

The wet season is a stunning time to see Bamurru Plains. This is a time of increasing humidity and heat, with the build up of massive cumulus clouds and exciting thunder and lightning shows. Waterfalls tumble and the landscape turns a lush green. Average temperatutes range from 25-33ºC (77-91ºF). Bamurru Plains is closed from 1st November each year.

Spring at Bullo River Station

Spring brings an increase in humidity, and a rise in heat. As a result, temperatures begin to climb to the high 30’s again, even tipping 40 occasionally. At Bullo, the pace changes slightly, making the most of early morning starts and later afternoon activities to enjoy poolside relaxation and air-conditioned comfort in the heat of the day. Bullo River Station closes from October – March each year during the months of the wet season.
