Bamurru Plains

Experiences

Immerse yourself in a unique natural environment. The floodplains and savannah woodland surrounding Bamurru Plains offer one of Australia’s richest wildlife experiences, whether explored by air,  airboat safari, 4WD or on two feet. See what to do when at Bamurru Plains

“Our prime motivation is to open the minds of our guests through the interactive activities and information provided by our guides. They interpret the plant, bird, mammal, insect and reptile life and how different species interact within the natural environment.”

CHARLIE CARLOW, FOUNDER

Bamurru's expert guides lead exhilarating airboat trips on the floodplains, safaris in open-top 4WD vehicles, fishing trips, guided wilderness walks, crocodile-spotting river cruises and excursions to ancient rock art galleries in Kakadu.

There is also a purpose-built ‘hide’, six-metres high in the tree canopy, from where guests can watch, undisturbed, many of the hundreds of bird species that make the Mary River catchment home.

Another excursion involves a light plane flight and full day exploring Arnhem Land or Kakadu National Park, the stronghold of Aboriginal culture in Australia. Under special permit from the Traditional Owners, guests visit some of the best rock art galleries in the NT – a record of 50,000 years of Aboriginal habitation – while a local guide explains traditional knowledge and the depth of history and storytelling in the world’s oldest living culture.

“|t seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. |t is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.”

DAVID ATTENBOROUGH

At Bamurru Plains, the day breaks to the tune of thousands of magpie geese, the whistling of the kites and the thumping of wallabies hopping by your bungalow.

The coastal floodplains of northern Australia are home to prolific bird and wildlife (Australia’s answer to the Okavango Delta). Dominated by the climatic extremes of the tropical monsoon, the wetlands and savannah woodlands that fringe the coastal regions between Darwin and Kakadu National Park, the floodplains of the Mary River catchment form one of the most significant ecosystems in Australia.

A morning trip out from Bamurru Plains in an airboat is utterly exhilarating and the only way to truly experience this environment. Your guide will provide you with a hands-on demonstration of the many uses of the flora from the wetlands whilst floating amongst a forest of melaleuca trees or looking out for crocodiles slowly swimming amongst the grasses of the floodplain. Glide through fields of lotus lilies and enchanting paperbark forests and watch as birds take flight as you zip across the floodplains on your airboat, flocks sometimes thousands strong!

On guided walks and drives search for brumbies, buffalo, dingoes and wallabies or pause to look at an intriguing reptile or insect.

A scenic flight over Kakadu and the escarpment in the early months of the year is an awe inspiring experience as the waterfalls cascade from the plateau into the floodplains below.
