Saffire operates a Tasmanian Devil Enclosure as part of the ‘Save The Devils’ conservation effort. A facial tumour has wiped out 80% of the species over the past decade, but concerted efforts with 35 enclosures across Tasmania and Victoria to create and manage tumour-free enclosures have proven successful. Historically, carnivorous animals raised in captivity only had a 30% survival rate when transferred into the wild, but the Tasmanian devils released so far have experienced a 96% survival rate, prompting celebration for having successfully combatted extinction.
Saffire is one of the key partners for Professor Greg Woods who is conducting critical research through the Menzies Institute to find a vaccine for the Tasmanian Devils’ facial tumours. Guests are even invited to ‘Adopt a Devil’, by donating to the effort and receiving quarterly updates.
