This year marks the 8th performance at qualia in a long running collaboration between The Australian Ballet and qualia, coming together every second year to bring to life a very special and unique repertoire ‘pas de deux in Paradise’.
Set under the stars at Pebble Beach qualia, this intimate showcase was a spectacle of elegance and natural beauty blended with unbelievable talent, with a backdrop of the Whitsundays and the Coral Sea to top it all off. A particularly special event, 2022 saw the Australian Ballet enter the celebration of their 60th year, coinciding with the launch of their 2023 season.
Principal artists Amy Harris and Adam Bull alongside Aya Watanabe and Cameron Holmes performed a selection of pas de deux from The Merry Widow, Don Quixote, Le Corsaire and Raymonda – the first performance at qualia under the artistic direction of David Hallberg.
Prior to his appointment as the eighth Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet, David was a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre and the Bolshoi Ballet, a principal guest artist with The Royal Ballet and resident guest artist with The Australian Ballet. After winning the prestigious Benois de la Danse Prize for Best Male Dancer in 2010, David established the David Hallberg Scholarship to mentor aspiring male dancers at American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company and Ballet Arizona. He has also created and directs ABT INCUBATOR, a workshop encouraging creation by emerging choreographers.
qualia guests were provided a chance to gain a rare insight into life behind the scenes of The Australian Ballet. The itinerary included a morning Ballet Barre class at Spa qualia and a Dance Class viewing of the dancers held on stage at Pebble Beach as well as a chance to hear from David in a Masterclass ‘From Dancer to Director’.
