Exciting news has emerged as Pretty Beach House has achieved the esteemed Eco-Certification by the industry body Ecotourism Australia. Ecotourism Australia’s certification programs are tailored for tourism industry businesses and operators to highlight their dedication to sustainable and responsible tourism. Certification is based on international best practice standards.

Pretty Beach House business owners and team are deeply committed to sustainable practices across all areas of their operations. A significant step towards this new certification involved collaborating with data specialists from Impact Sustainability last year. This partnership allows the business to measure, manage, track, and report their emissions through advanced software.

Everyday Sustainability
Since its inception in 2007, the business has continuously enhanced its sustainability processes. Pretty Beach House has long-established partnerships with local growers and producers in the hinterland, who supply high-quality, nutrient-dense produce, including locally sourced seafoods, reflecting the very best foods from the best growers of the region. Some 15% of fresh produce also comes from the lodge’s own vegetable gardens, from which fruits, herbs and vegetables are sourced for the seasonal, produce-driven menus.

Composting
The business has invested in a Closed Loop Organics Commercial Composter, which uses microbes and heat to convert food waste into nutrient-rich soil within 24 hours. This continuous process allows for easy addition of food waste throughout the day, with compost unloaded weekly and put back into the gardens at Pretty Beach House and Bells at Killcare.

Funding Climate Action
In 2023, during their Ecotourism Certification journey, the business recognised the importance of collaborating with like-minded eco and sustainability focused organisations. This led to a partnership with the Australian team at Groundswell, an organisation that funds climate action by pooling donated money and distributing it through grants to support companies addressing the climate crisis in Australia. Guests who book a stay at Pretty Beach House are invited to make a small voluntary contribution to Groundswell, further supporting climate action efforts.
