El Questro’s observance of NAIDOC week offers a profound journey into the rich history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through a series of immersive experiences that allow guests to deeply engage with Traditional Owners. All activities are included in the all-inclusive Homestead rates, ensuring a seamless and luxurious cultural immersion. NAIDOC Week is held from Sunday, 7 July – Sunday, 14 July, 2024.

Cultural Star Gazing & Storytelling
A highlight of the week is the Cultural Star Gazing & Storytelling event at The Station airstrip, where guests gather under the expansive outback sky to hear Traditional Owners share tales about the constellations and the Wallanganda (Milky Way), revealing their deep connection to the land and cosmos.

NAIDOC Art Workshop
Guests can also participate in the NAIDOC Art Workshop at El Questro Station, creating personal NAIDOC art pieces alongside Traditional Owners in a serene riverside setting. These artworks serve as tangible memories of the week’s significance and a testament to the shared journey of learning and respect.

Injiid Marlabu Calls Us
New to El Questro in 2024, Injiid Marlabu Calls Us offers a unique cultural immersion experience, introducing guests to the Ngarinyin Aboriginal people’s relationship with the land and waters of the East Kimberley. This experience includes ~

• Bijagoon (smoking): An ancient healing ritual to cleanse the body, mind, and soul.
• Ngiadi (Liyarn): The calling of the Ngiadi, an ancient tool and pathfinder.
• The Coolamon: Understanding the significance of the Coolamon, a crucial vessel in Aboriginal motherhood.
• Colours of Country: Exploring the four customary colours of Country: Black Charcoal, White Ochre, Red Ochre, and Yellow Ochre.
• Storytelling and Sharing of Songs: Sharing the stories of Injiid and songs about Country.

The burning and cleansing ceremony is a vital Ngarinyin cultural and spiritual practice, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the culture and Country of El Questro.

NAIDOC week at El Questro is a time for reflection and engagement, encouraging guests to listen and learn from Traditional Owners’ stories and perspectives. It’s an opportunity to honour the culture that has thrived on this land for tens of thousands of years.

As the week unfolds, each thoughtfully planned event, from art workshops to storytelling sessions, ensures that guests can fully engage with the culture in a respectful and meaningful way. The inclusive Homestead rates guarantee that every guest can partake in this enriching experience.
