The Lizard Island Research Station is a coral reef research facility, owned and operated by the Australian Museum and is internationally recognised as the major island-based research facility on the Great Barrier Reef.

The facility has been operating since 1973 and is a dedicated to supporting the advancement of knowledge and understanding of the Great Barrier Reef. It attracts coral reef researchers from all around the world – with approximately 100 research projects conducted annually. 

Guests at Lizard Island have the opportunity to be immersed in the current research and projects being undertaken on the Great Barrier Reef. Running on Monday and Thursday mornings, the Research Station Tour is a great way to learn the history of the island and develop a greater understanding for the conservation efforts for the reef.
