The El Questro Wilderness Senior Ranger has reported the first sightings of the Gouldian Finch at Saddleback Soak. Once classified as endangered in the wild, due to high levels of poaching for their colourful plumes, the Gouldian Finch is one of 100 species of birds that call El Questro Wilderness Park home.
The Gouldian Finch is considered the most spectacularly coloured of all Australian birds – with bright green back plumage, yellow bellies and purple breasts. The majority of the Gouldian Finches have small black faces with about 25 per cent of population being red faced and very rarely, a yellow faced finch is sighted.
Known as a grass finch, the Gouldian Finch is sparsely distributed in tropical northern areas from Derby, Western Australia to the Gulf of Carpentaria – but is most common in the north and north western parts of the State. These small birds live close to water holes and create nests in tree hollows or termite mounds – rarely creating a nest up high in a tree.
“With only six weeks remaining until El Questro Wilderness Park closes for the rejuvenating green season, now is the perfect time to book a holiday at one of our three accommodation options and get to see first-hand the Gouldian Finch and other wildlife and wonders of the Kimberley region.” said Lori Litwack, General Manager.
