Spring means the clear, warm Lord Howe Island waters are ablaze with colour and guests can soon be strolling through native Kentia palm and Banyan tree forests or along deserted golden sand beaches (there are 11 to choose from), exploring the island by bicycle and snorkelling over pristine coral reefs, right off the beach. With the average temperature around 20ºc / 68ºF – it’s a spectacular time to visit Capella Lodge as the wildlife flourishes in the warmer temperatures and the seasonal menu celebrates local spring ingredients. 

It’s one of the best times of year for trekking up Mt Gower, a gruelling but rewarding eight-hour exercise described as one of the greatest one-day hikes in the world.

Birdwatchers will appreciate this time of year as it brings Muttonbirds returning in force as they prepare burrows before laying a single egg in the last weeks of November. Capella guests can observe landbirds start nesting and the Red-tailed Tropicbirds breeding along the cliffs. Masked Booby chicks are abundant and Grey Ternlets and Providence Petrel chicks have fledged. 

After a few busy months, Capella Lodge closed for its annual cool season clean, ensuring the uncompromising and meticulous standards are upheld and reopens October 01 2021.
