From behind the lens, photographer Rhiannon Taylor captures the quiet magic of Pelorus Private Island on the Great Barrier Reef – the newest addition to Luxury Lodges of Australia. Taylor recognises the shifting hues of the Coral Sea, the rhythm of island life, and the beauty that unfolds in every frame. As the only private island residence of its kind in North Queensland, time at Pelorus Island feels suspended. Days drift between golden hours, barefoot moments and salt-tinged air, where every detail — from the curve of the shoreline to the play of light at dusk — tells a the story of the connection to place.
Rhiannon Taylor reflects on her time on Pelorus Private Island with her family this year.
From behind the lens, what makes Pelorus Private Island such a unique setting for capturing family memories?
“There’s such a strong sense of freedom on the island. Its exclusive use lends the guest to just let go and feel free. No pressure to be anywhere at a certain time, no dinner reservations, no rush, which as a family is such a rarity and removing that stress really allows you to relax and be present for every moment.”
What family-friendly activities were a favourite with your family? Is there anything you’d come back to do next time?
“Fishing was probably the biggest hit with my husband and kids. They got a huge thrill from catching a huge Spanish mackerel – they’re still talking about it! I loved the water bikes with the kids tagging along on the floaty, was such fun spotting the sea life! I think next time we’d definitely be keen to see Hichinibrook Island and go for a hike.”
What advice would you give families to make the most of their time on the Pelorus Private Island?
“Take full advantage of the expert team to host you – it really allows you to embrace the island and maximise your adventure. They go above and beyond to make sure your every wish and need are looked after, so you can just embrace the island on the Great Barrier Reef.”
What’s your favourite place on Pelorus Island to sneak away to with your camera? And when you’re not shooting, how do you like to spend downtime on the island?
“The pool. Stunning sunsets and endless vistas across the islands. I loved walking around the sprawling house collecting shells with the kids – so many unique (and huge) shapes, simple joys. And sipping the best cocktails by the pool at sunset overlooking the Coral Sea.”
If you could describe Pelorus Private Island in three words, what would they be?
“Unparalleled. Immersive. Luxury.”
