Tasmanian expedition cruise company On Board has launched a new Artist in Residence Program, inviting Tasmanian artists to experience and interpret the extraordinary landscapes of Tasmania’s remote southwest from aboard expedition vessel Odalisque III.

Operating within the UNESCO Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, the Luxury Lodges of Australia member has spent the past decade guiding guests through Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour, where weather, water and wilderness shape every journey. The new residency program extends this connection to place, welcoming one Tasmanian artist each season to join guests and crew on an expedition and create work inspired by the experience.

Unlike traditional residencies, artists become part of the journey itself. Sharing the same walks, waterways, anchorages and conversations as fellow travellers, the creative process unfolds alongside the expedition, allowing the landscape to influence the work in real time.

Hobart-based artist Harrison Bowe has been named the program’s inaugural Artist in Residence. His time in the southwest is informing a new body of work that captures the region’s shifting coastal light, geological textures and quiet intensity.

“The southwest has always drawn artists, not as a backdrop but as an active force,” says Alice van der Woude, Director of Marketing and Experience at On Board. “What we wanted to explore was what happens when an artist is fully inside the expedition – not observing from a distance, but moving through the same landscape, at the same pace, in the same conditions.”

Expressions of interest are now open for future residencies, with one position available annually between December and May.

For guests travelling aboard Odalisque III, the residency offers a unique opportunity to witness the creative process unfold against one of Australia’s most spectacular wilderness settings.
