Despite the devastation and damage, staff at Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island have taken comfort in the tiny miracles emerging from the bushfire aftermath. An echidna, affectionately named “Enchilada” by the staff at Southern Ocean Lodge, has been spotted alive and well.  The staff are absolutley thrilled and relieved to find the well known resident echidna wandering around the pathways at Southern Ocean Lodge once more. Echidnas have well-adapted to survive Australia’s bushfires, with the ability to curl into a (spiny) ball and burrow into the ground while the fire passes over them. It is moments like this, that we are reminded of both the fragilility, and resilience of Australia‘s wildlife and the land we share with them.
