Southern Ocean Lodge

Destination

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders past, present and emerging.

“Anyone stepping ashore on K/, as South Australians know the island, quickly falls under its spell; time slows and the wider world seems to melt away. Although /’ve visited many times, that magic never fades. /t’s an alchemy of landscape, wildlife and the islanders themselves…”

Christine McCabe, The Australian

Australia’s third-largest island, Kangaroo Island lies 15km from the shores of mainland South Australia.

Kangaroo Island was separated from mainland Australia around 10,000 years ago, due to rising sea levels. It is recognised as Karta or “Island of the Dead” by mainland Aboriginal tribes. Although there are no known Traditional Custodians, shell middens and stone tools demonstrate that Aboriginal people lived on Kangaroo Island for as long as 16,000 years and may have only disappeared from the island as recently as 2,000 years ago.

Spanning 155km in length by 55km in width, and covering some 4,500 sq km, Kangaroo Island offers the best of the mainland on a smaller scale. Boasting 21 national and conservation parks, Kangaroo Island has established itself as a premier destination for nature lovers.

“Regeneration, revival, renewal: All were what / came to Kangaroo /sland to see, and now that /’m here, they appear at every turn.”

Katherine LaGrave, AFAR

Often regarded as a micro version of Australia, Kangaroo Island boasts a thriving sample of the nation’s diverse native landscapes, flora and fauna.

Widely acclaimed as Australia’s Galapagos, Kangaroo Island is home to an abundance of native wildlife and spectacular natural attractions.

Visitors wander among sea lions lolling on the beach, walk the Remarkable Rocks or see fur seals frolicking in the Southern Ocean at Admirals Arch. More than one third of the island is covered by national and conservation parks and visitors can expect to see kangaroos and koalas, echidnas and goannas, sea lions and long-nosed fur seals living in their natural environment, just as nature intended. For those wishing to explore, a series of walking trails traverses limestone cliffs, bushland tracks and pristine beach shores.

A place of wild beauty, Kangaroo Island is pounded by the Southern Ocean and blessed with dramatic coastal vistas free of development. Bordered by sheer limestone cliffs, sheltered coves and stretches of sugar-white-sanded beaches, the sense of place about the island is enhanced by its fascinating history of wretched shipwrecks and of stoic farmers privileged with few comforts save the stars in the clear night sky.
