The days are typically warm in Northern Outback Queensland, usually reaching 25 – 30°C. Overnight temperatures can drop to 13 – 15°C in the winter (June – August), making the lodge’s indoor and outdoor fireplaces a gloriously inviting spot to sit after your adventurous days. April to October tend to bring warm, dry days with spectacular blue skies, while rainfall in the wet season (November to January) fills the boulder-strewn rivers and creek beds.

Comfortable casual wear is recommended for the day, including firm walking shoes and light, loose clothing, particularly for guests participating in activities such as hiking and fishing. During the winter months warm clothes for evenings and early mornings are needed. Relaxed evening wear is also encouraged for dinners at the lodge.

Hat, camera, sunscreen and swimwear are all essential items in order to take advantage of the spectacular landscape and pristine swimming spots.

Mt Mulligan Lodge has a seasonal closure from late January to early March each year.

  • Find your inner Mad Max and navigate outback tracks in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV).
  • After the wet season, join the Gorge-ous Hike. Not for the faint hearted, the hike takes you scrambling up and down boulders bound by the towering escarpment and through lush vegetation to a picturesque gorge. A refreshing waterhole beckons you to take a dip as a reward for your efforts.
  • Whilst taking in the scenery on the weir on your stand-up paddle board, keep your eye out – you may be lucky enough to sight a platypus.
  • Before dinner take a stroll up the hill towards the sunset bar and sip on sundowners as the landscape changes colour from dusk to darkness.
  • Keep an eye out for the Australian bustard bird, our very own road runner.

By air: Mt Mulligan Lodge is a 35-minute scenic helicopter journey from Cairns. Due to weight restrictions on the helicopter, passengers are requested to bring a small, soft duffle bag up to a maximum weight of 15kg in total. If required, there are duffle bags on site at the helicopter hangar for you to re-pack your luggage. Excess luggage can be stored safely while you are at the lodge. The body weight of each individual guest must also be provided in kilograms at the time of booking. For arrival by private jet, a landing strip is located nearby at the township of Mareeba. The Morris Escapes jet can seat up to 10 guests and departs from all major cities in Australia.

By road: Mt Mulligan Lodge is a 2.5-3 hour 4WD journey from Cairns. It is a challenging drive, so unless guests are confident and experienced with driving 4WD vehicles on unsealed roads, booking a private 4WD vehicle, bus or limousine transfer is suggested and can be arranged by Mt Mulligan Lodge on request. If staying in early January or late March (during the wet season), it is recommended booking a helicopter charter as road closures may occur. Mt Mulligan Lodge closes from late January to early March each year.

Please contact Mt Mulligan Lodge to discuss your preferred transport arrangements before booking your domestic flights or international flights to/from Cairns.
