The Barossa is one of the world's great wine regions; revered alongside Bordeaux, Napa and Tuscany and just an hour's drive from Adelaide. An entire world of gastronomic delights awaits in this picturesque region of villages, rolling hills, stone churches and vineyards. Continuing north and the scenery opens up to an ancient landscape home to a huge array of birds and animals. The Ikara-Flinders Ranges offers some of Australia's most striking outback scenery and a significant snapshot of South Australia's geological heritage.

From adelaide, 4.5hr drive to arkaba or arrange to arrive via scenic flight.

1 Southern Ocean Lodge Ikara-Flinders Ranges, South Australia

Arkaba’s true luxury lies in the fact that its 60,000 acres are shared by just 10 guests, taking the definition of exclusivity to a new level in Australia. Located in the ancient and awe-inspiring landscape of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges, Arkaba provides the opportunity to immerse yourself in the story of the bush – its ancient geology, diverse wildlife and the chance to understand the conservation challenges that Australia faces.

Formerly a sheep station and now a private conservancy, you have chance to give back and get ‘hands on’ with the conservation programs offered at the property. Arkaba’s team of expert field guides live and breathe the bush and through a mix of guided walks, open top safari drives and sheer passion, they will open up the secrets of one of Australia’s most fascinating and spectacular landscapes.

What will I do there?

  • Aboriginal culture – immerse yourself in Adnyamathanha culture with a local guide and connect to the stories of the First Nations people who have long looked after Country.
  • 4WD safari – day trip into neighbouring Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park and drive through the Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges, visiting the old mining town of Blinman and lunch at an outback pub hotel.
  • Evening dining – as the property was formerly a sheep station, it would be amiss not to enjoy dining around an old wool-classing table on the outdoor terrace. With the ever-changing light and sounds of the bush all around, this is a special and uniquely Australian experience.
  • Fossil Hunting – the fossils preserved in the ancient sea-floor at Ediacara in the Ikara- Flinders Ranges record the first known multicellular animal life on Earth that predates the Cambrian.
  • Complete the stay with a Creekside Massage. Signature cold pressed oils linger on the skin, leaving you with the rejuvenating aromas of quandong seed, juniper berry, eucalyptus and a sprinkle of native lemongrass.
