Writing for US trade publication Travel Weekly, explorer-at-large Arnie Weissmann travels the length of Australia, from the tropical Top End to the wild Southern Ocean, and finds that this journey across extreme landscapes can be made in real comfort. His route takes in the flood plains of Bamurru Plains, four days aboard the Ghan, and a final stop on Kangaroo Island at Southern Ocean Lodge.
At Bamurru Plains, a safari-style camp on the edge of a vast flood plain east of Darwin, Weissmann explores by airboat and safari vehicle, encountering saltwater crocodiles, wallabies, dingoes and more than 200 species of birds. He likens spotting a giant croc to “spotting a lion in Africa”, while his mesh-walled bungalow gave the scenery outside a cinematic quality.
On Kangaroo Island, he finds Southern Ocean Lodge rebuilt after the 2020 bushfires, with sea lions at Seal Bay, fur seals in Flinders Chase, koalas in Hanson Bay Sanctuary and a pick-your-own South Australian wine cellar. “Simply put, Southern Ocean Lodge blew me away,” he writes.
