Writing for the Financial Times, travel journalist Ruaridh Nicoll journeys to Bullo River Station, a 75km dirt track off the highway in the Northern Territory’s remote north-west. What he finds at the end is a working cattle station on the edge of the Timor Sea, reimagined as an intimate 12-room retreat across 400,000 acres of sandstone escarpment, gorges, billabongs and waterfalls.
From helicopter flights to ancient rock art and plunge pools beyond the reach of crocodiles, to sunrise birdwatching and Wagyu-cross steaks under a sky thick with stars, Nicoll’s stay left a lasting impression. He calls Bullo River “one of my favourite places anywhere”, describing the drive in as passing through “a portal into a world of wonder few get to see”. By the time he left, the 75km track felt far too short.
