Orpheus Island Lodge, the newest addition to Luxury Lodges of Australia on the Great Barrier Reef, has officially reopened following a major renovation of its North Beachfront accommodation.

Located within the protected waters of the Palm Island Archipelago north of Townsville, the luxury island lodge welcomed guests back in early July 2026. Redesigned by award-winning Australian architecture and interior studio Dubois – the designer for Morris Escapes’ Pelorus Private Island and Mt Mulligan Lodge – the new North Beachfront Rooms, Suites and Villas feature additional space, elevated ceilings, and new furnishings that highlight the seamless connection to the island’s natural surroundings.

Situated on the northern side of the lodge’s main pavilion, the North Beachfront accommodation makes up more than half of Orpheus Island Lodge’s total of 14 rooms, with the new design allowing guests the option to interconnect rooms and suites to create an expansive standalone private villa, perfect for multi-generational family travellers.

Inspired by the Coral Sea, the redesign of the North Beachfront accommodation reflects a contemporary expression of island luxury. Expanded indoor and outdoor living spaces, complemented by elevated ceilings, create an effortless sense of openness while framing uninterrupted ocean views. A calming palette drawn from the surrounding reef is paired with textured natural finishes, warm timber detailing and bespoke furnishings crafted from premium natural materials, delivering a sophisticated yet understated aesthetic that honours the property’s rich history while thoughtfully shaping its next chapter.

The spacious outdoor living area has been enhanced with the addition of timber decking, outdoor lounges and an openable pergola with sliding screens for customisable levels of shade and privacy. The renovated North Beachfront Suites and Villas also include a spacious separate living area that seamlessly opens to the private patio, as well as newly designed bathrooms finished with textured render, bronze tapware, double vanities and walk-in rain showers.

In line with Orpheus Island Lodge’s certification as an Advanced EcoTourism Australia property, the renovation has been carefully planned with the lodge’s ongoing dedication to sustainability in mind. All building materials have been sourced and selected with waste minimisation and carbon footprint reduction principles front and centre. Landscaping around the newly renovated suites features tropical plants native to North Queensland.

Beyond the island’s surrounding reefs, Orpheus Island Lodge continues to offer bespoke experiences to the outer reaches of the Great Barrier Reef, allowing guests to discover some of the region’s most spectacular marine environments. Private guiding, including Outer Reef scuba diving and snorkelling experiences, provides a personalised way to explore the reef, with expert guides tailoring each experience to individual interests and abilities, from secluded snorkelling locations and world-class dive sites to encounters with the remarkable marine life that calls this UNESCO World Heritage-listed ecosystem home.

Dining remains central to the Orpheus experience, with daily changing menus showcasing the finest seasonal Australian produce alongside fresh seafood sourced from the surrounding region. Each meal celebrates a sense of place, complemented by an award-winning wine cellar and spectacular oceanfront settings in the outdoor restaurant.

Ross Penegar, CEO, Morris Escapes, said the reopening represents an exciting new era for the lodge. “Orpheus Island Lodge has always been one of Australia’s most extraordinary destinations, and this transformation ensures it will continue to set the benchmark for luxury island hospitality for years to come. Every element of the refurbishment has been undertaken with immense care to honour the island’s unique character while enhancing the guest experience in meaningful ways.”

As the newest member of Luxury Lodges of Australia, Orpheus Island Lodge continues to showcase the very best of Australian experiential luxury, offering discerning travellers an unparalleled opportunity to disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with nature in one of the world’s most extraordinary marine environments.
