The settlement of one of the largest land claims in the Kimberley spells a new chapter for this already historic lodge (El Questro Homestead) as Fiona Carruthers discovers for the Australian Financial Review.
In November, 2022, a landmark Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) was reached between the WAC and the Western Australian Government, which included a 99-year lease for G’Day Group to conduct tourism activities over the whole of the former pastoral lease area.
But the much bigger job is leaning into the land use agreement and the many responsibilities that come with it. “We’re now joint custodians of the land with the Traditional Owners,” says CEO and Founder, Grant Wilckens. “We’ll be doing everything we can to respect their connection to Country as we all enter a significant new era for El Questro. Our landlords have history of more than 65,000 years on this land, so we’re in pretty good hands.”
