Capella Lodge have taken on the annual challenge of Plastic-Free July on Lord Howe Island, an initiative dedicated to improving the environmental footprint of millions of businesses around the world. Residents of the World Heritage-listed subtropical paradise are vigilant in collecting plastics washed up from overseas and practise a good rule – ‘take 3 for the sea’, in which people collect 3 pieces of rubbish when leaving the beach.
As a part of being dedicated climate action activists, Capella use refillable vessels for all guest amenities rather than use single-use body and hair care products and recycle everything from glass and paper goods to organic food waste which is gathered at Lord Howe Island’s award-winning tip. As there is no landfill capability on the island, all waste that cannot be composted must be transported to the mainland by barge, at significant cost to the small island community. 86 per cent of the island’s waste diverted from landfill to recycling, demonstrating the strong island culture of re-use, reduce and recycle.
