The Aboriginal people of Australia have a much more pragmatic attitude to the changing of the seasons – their very existence once depended greatly on timely adaption to changes in the weather and, in the Kimberley – the Yawuru people have always referred to not four but six seasons:

Mankala – December, January, February and March (the wet season)

Marul – April (when the winds are still)

Wirralburu – May (the cooling period, when the winds are dry)

Barrgana – June, July and August (when it is cooler and sometimes foggy in the morning)

Wirlburu – September (starting to warm but still dry)

Larja – October and November (when it’s hot and the humidity is high)

These are the seasons that continue to shape this great land and, all those who live there!

And soon it will be Mankala – the most dramatic season of them all!

Mankala brings the spectacular thunderstorms, the thundering rains and the tropical temperatures.

And when Mankala ends it will be Marul – the waterfall season.

Marul is also when the bloodwoods flower, when the sand paper fig and wild prune fruit, when the birds fly relentless between blossom and when the lizards are slow with rainy season girth.

Marlu is the season of plenty and, it is also when the mighty TRUE NORTH returns to the Kimberley.
