Entering the aptly named Great Room at Southern Ocean Lodge is less like arriving at a hotel than at a particularly fabulous private home, where house guests are welcomed on a first-name basis and treated to superb hospitality throughout their stay.  Needs are anticipated; guest preferences are stored away in the collective staff memory.  It’s that very fine balance between being highly trained in personal service but knowing it’s not always necessary to fuss and flutter.  Far more important just to be there, ready to respond to whatever wishes guests may have.  And, in the case of Southern Ocean Lodge, often to anticipate those wishes even before guests have articulated them.  It’s not exactly mind-reading; it’s just that sometimes, the team can be so perceptive, it’s as though they know you better than you know yourself.
