Stretching for 260kms along Australia’s west coast, the World Heritage Ningaloo Reef is the world’s longest fringing coastal reef and remains one of Australia’s best kept natural secrets. Isolated by distance, a rugged arid hinterland, and untouched by coastal degradation or pollution, Ningaloo Reef is arguably the best preserved reef complex in the world, and it lies just a few metres offshore from Sal Salis.
Along the coastline, there are numerous picturesque beaches offering stunning drift snorkels and sheltered bays. And with the reef a few metres offshore, as soon as you dip below the surface, the vibrancy of the underwater world is exhilarating. A drift snorkel reveals a wealth of life, with huge staghorn coral formations, anemones, clownfish, rays and sponge gardens. All snorkelling gear and wet suits are provided; and if you are a beginner (or just needing a refresher) the Sal Salis guides will be happy to give a lesson or just share a few tips.
The reef protects a lagoon that is on average only 2-4 metres deep and is rich in marine life. There are limitless snorkel sites along the Ningaloo coastline and a variety of ways to access them. Slip on a snorkel or diving gear and swim with graceful manta rays, see dolphins and schools of brightly coloured fish in the clearest turquoise water imaginable.
Ningaloo is also a major breeding ground for hawksbill, loggerhead and green turtles, which come ashore to lay their eggs in the dunes at night (between September and December).”
