Lizard Island

Destination

We acknowledge and pay respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of the Great Barrier Reef region. In sharing elements of their history, heritage and culture we acknowledge the Dingaal people – the Traditional Custodians of Jiiguru (Lizard Island), the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which the lodge stands.

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world, and pulling away from it, and viewing it from a greater distance, you can understand why. /t is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible from space.

The Great Barrier Reef region is rich in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage, with evidence of their sustainable and symbiotic relationship dating back over 60,000 years, long before the Reef was formed 7,000 years ago.

With this culture remaining strong, there are today approximately 70 Traditional Owner clan groups whose Sea Country includes the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

The Great Barrier Reef is a World Heritage-listed, natural inspiration. One of Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef. Stretching over 3,000km, the reef is between 15km and 150km offshore and around 65km wide in some parts, a gathering of brilliant, vivid coral providing divers with the most spectacular underwater experience imaginable.

Located on the northernmost tip of the Great Barrier Reef, Lizard /sland offers an opportunity to experience this great natural wonder of the world in all its diversity and extraordinary beauty.

Located right on the Great Barrier Reef, 240 kilometres north of Cairns, Lizard Island is truly secluded from the rest of the world, accessible only by a scenic flight over the reef and turquoise waters.

Fringed in richly-coloured coral reef gardens that shimmer beneath clear turquoise water, the island boasts 24 powdery-white beaches, more than 1,000 hectares of national park and the bluest of clear blue ocean views from every angle. The island was declared a National Park in 1937 with the surrounding waters recognised as a National Marine Park in 1974.

The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of more than 3,000 individual reef systems, 300 coral cays and picturesque tropical islands with some of the world’s most beautiful sun-soaked, golden beaches.

The beaches are undisturbed but for occasional footprints. Coral reef gardens fringe the island shimmering beneath crystal-clear water. Giant clams laze on the seabed as nosy potato cod and sea turtles keep watch. Here, the marine life is renowned the world over.

Spectacular all year round, the Great Barrier Reef region averages more than 300 days of sunshine per year and enjoys blissful tropical island conditions, with warm days and nights kept manageable by gentle ocean breezes.
