Lord Howe Island is home to over 200 different species of birds. For bird lovers staying at Capella Lodge, the island’s teaming colonies of seabirds can be viewed along nearby cliffs and beaches at different times of year, including red-tailed tropic birds, shearwaters (mutton birds), sooty turns and masked boobies.
Walk the Little Island track between March and November to view the spectacular aerial courtship displays of the Providence Petrel. One of the world’s rarest birds, the Providence Petrel returns to the island to nest in the southern mountains and can be ‘called’ out of the air, landing at your feet.
